Xbox One’s May update to allow Smartglass to switch it on and off

Xbox Live preview programme participants are testing an update to the Xbox One right now that adds a bunch of new functionality to the console, including the ability to turn it on and off using the Smartglass mobile app.

That was one of the most-requested features, garnering over 4 000 votes from the Xbox One community according to Xbox Wire.

The catch is the phone or tablet must be on the same network as the Xbox One in order for the command to work, but on the bright side that means you’ll be able to turn your Xbox One on as soon as you connect to your home network, and have it ready to go by the time you sit down in front of it.

The setup process for new Xbox Ones has also been updated to allow people to choose which power mode they’d like to set as their default. The Xbox One can be put into a low-power mode that downloads updates even when it’s sleeping, or can be set to power off entirely, and now gamers get to choose which mode they prefer right from the get-go.

Microsoft is also apparently working hard on the Windows 10 side of things, updating the Xbox app on the latest Preview build of the OS (10061) with a Game Bar that enables in-game video recording  – simply press Windows + Alt + G to initiate it and the last 30 seconds of your game will be saved as a video – as well as screenshot captures (Windows + Alt + Print Screen) and updated Live Tiles.

Xbox Wire has all the details, including those of features we here in South Africa will probably not use for years to come like wireless display streaming and support for over-the-air TV.

For the full rundown on what this update will bring when it rolls out to all Xbox Ones, check out the video below, put together by Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb and Xbox engineer Richard Irving, in which they delve into the upcoming update.
