Getty unveils R120k grant for Instagramers documenting everyday life

Getty Images is giving Instagram photographers with a penchant for capturing shots of everyday life a chance to show off their best work and receive a grant worth $10 000 (R120 000).

Part of the beauty of Instagram is the open accessibility to raw talent displayed by amateur and professional photographers using the photo sharing service to showcase their surroundings. The inaugural Getty Images Instagram Grant aims to support these photographers by giving them an international platform and funding that will assist them in their work.

“The purpose of this grant is to support photographers using Instagram to document stories from underrepresented communities around the world. We recognize that Instagram has introduced new opportunities for emerging voices, outside the mainstream media, to create and share projects of social importance. Photographers around the world are experimenting on Instagram and we want to encourage and support that work,” Getty said.

Three winners from around the world will be chosen to receive a grant as well as mentorship from an award-winning Getty Images photographer.

Five professional photographers from different fields will be judging entries according to the quality of the imagery, visual and compelling storytelling and on the project and stories told through their photos.

Entries close on 4th June and must be submitted through the grant’s website. The following must be included in your entry:

  • Personal background information, maximum 500 words.
  • Details on your approach to using Instagram and how you intend to use the funds to support new or ongoing projects of social impact on Instagram.
  • 10-20 images from your Instagram account, including links, sized at a minimum of 1000×1000 pixels at 72dpi.

The winners’ photos will be exhibited at the Photoville exhibition in New York in September and displayed on the Getty Images grants website.
