New algorithm can remove your reflection from photos

Don’t you just hate it when you take pictures of gorgeous vistas through a window, only to capture a reflection of yourself holding your phone or camera up to your face as well?

Well, soon that won’t be a problem. According to an article on Mashable, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an algorithm that can digitally remove that reflection from your pictures.

It builds on the foundation developed by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and divides the image into 8×8 blocks of pixels. It then analyses the relationship of those pixels to the ones around them, and digitally removes what it determines to be reflections.

The research is still ongoing, but it’s not impossible that it will begin appearing in photo software, cameras and smartphones within the next few years.

It can’t come fast enough, because I have a bunch of pics that would be quite nice, if it wasn’t for my big fat reflection and I assume I’m not alone in that.
