South Africa to get 231 MW in new solar farms

South Africa can certainly do with a lot more renewable energy power plants, and alternative energy supplier Enel Green Power is at least getting a giant foot in the door.

The company, which has already signed on to build a 420GWh wind farm in Eastern Cape for R.2.1bn, revealed that is has been awarded the right to construct three solar farms with a total generating capacity of 231 MW.

The solar power projects will consist of Aurora (82.5 MW), Paleisheweul (82.5 MW) and Tom Burke (66 MW). In addition to the three solar projects, the company was also awarded the right to construct the Gibson Bay (111 MW) and Nojoli (88 MW) wind farms.

Making headway in already-allocated projects, Enel Green Power said that it has started construction on its Pulida facility in the Free State – an 82.5 MW solar power plant that will be able to produce 150 GWh per year.

“The new solar facility will have a total installed capacity of 82.5 MW and once fully operational will be able to generate more than 150 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual consumption needs of around 48 000 South African households, therefore avoiding the emission of more than 138 000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year,” it said in a media statement.

It added the electricity that will be produced from the plant will be fed back into Eskom’s national grid through a 20-year power supply agreement. The agreement was reached in 2013 as part of the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Enel has not yet disclosed completion dates for any of these projects, however.
