Cape radio station looking to crowdfund launch

One FM 94.0 in the Western Cape is giving new meaning to community radio by relying on funds from the community in order to go live.

As of right now, you have about a month to help get South Africa’s first crowdfunded community radio station broadcasting to Table View and neighbouring areas, which was awarded a broadcast license by ICASA in August of last year.

The radio station confirmed through a Bizcommunity post that there is even more in it for you. Depending on the contribution you make, you’ll get access to exclusive benefits that range from tickets to attend One FM events, being counted among members of the radio station as well as the coolness of having your name on a virtual wall alongside other contributors.

One FM also promises pre-sold advertising packages for businesses that help it get off the ground.

“I look forward to making history in South Africa, being the first radio station to be completely funded by crowdfunding. I invite the public to view what we have to offer and buy a reward. I especially urge businesses to take advantage of the advertising packages on offer – they are crazy and will never be repeated.” says Table View resident and radio veteran Ian Ward.

The target of R550 000 is a long way away, but this is surely a dream worth funding. The money, once raised, will be used to build the studios and install broadcast equipment and furnishings.

You can track the progress of One FM’s crowdfunding effort and make contributions via Thundafund. One FM has also set up an SMS line for those without internet access; SMSing the word ONE to 49940 donates R20.

Successful crowdfunding initiatives are not alien to our part of the world, with notable successes like Oranjezicht City Farm, which managed to raise 310% more than its R10 000 target on Thundafund. Another is the crowdfunding drive by Parlotones frontman Kahn Morbee who exceeded his R2o0 000 target in January for his new album.

And then there’s STASIS, an adventure game that was successfully Kickstarted by SA developer Chris Bischoff in late 2013, which managed to raise over a million rand.
