Man breaks flight record on a real-life hoverboard

A Canadian man has set a new world record for the farthest flight by a hoverboard, according to the Guinness World Records website.

Guinness says Catalin Alexandru Duru rode his prototype hoverboard for a total distance of 275.9m, reaching a height of 5m along the way. He told the organisation that the board can actually reach “scary heights”, which he hopes to explore in the future.

Sadly, Duru’s hoverboard doesn’t resemble the one Marty McFly rode in the Back to the Future movies, and nor can it do 88 miles per hour, but it is one he designed and built himself.

It uses a system of propellers to provide the lift needed to get him – and keep him – off the ground. Duru’s design also allows him to control the board with his feet and centre of gravity, just like ordinary boards used by surfers and skaters. It can also hover over any surface.

The record was set on – or more accurately, above – Quebec’s Lake Ouareau, where Duru easily exceeded the minimum distance of 50m required for the record.

Of course, it’s far more impressive to watch than it is to read about, so here is the official video Guinness put out on the spectacular event.
