People Can Fly leaves Epic with Bulletstorm

People Can Fly, the developer behind outlandish – and quite frankly, bonkers – shooters Bulletstorm and Painkiller has left Epic Games.

The Polish developer was fully acquired by Epic back in 2012 and officially renamed Epic Games Poland the following year, which also saw it release Gears Of War: Judgement – perhaps the least po-faced instalment in Epic’s cover-based shooter.

An announcement on People Can Fly’s website states that the studio has now regained its independence and adopted its old moniker. The split was apparently driven by the developer’s desire to create their own games and the fact that the inspiration “to create and iterate, was stronger than all the benefits of being a part of Epic group.”

By all accounts the split sounds very amicable as People Can Fly is continuing to work with Epic on the latter developer’s upcoming co-op sandbox survival game, Fortnite.

Most interestingly, however, People Can Fly have left Epic while retaining the rights to the Bulletstorm IP and the developer has announced it has a new game in the works.

“We, as a People Can Fly team, are extremely excited about new possibilities ahead of us,” said studio director Sebastian Wojciechowski. “We’re going to work on a new game, while continuing to partner with Epic and use UE4.”

Now, this announcement doesn’t necessarily mean that People Can Fly’s new project will be a sequel to Bulletstorm, but we’re daring to dream that it is. After the original failed to meet sales expectations, we thought we’d never see a Bulletstorm 2, which is a pity because it’s arguably one of the best shooters crafted on the last generation of consoles. Fingers crossed.
