EbonyTV Life targets international audience with VOD service

Nigeria’s EbonyLife TV network, a black woman-owned enterprise, has expanded its video on demand (VOD) service to bring locally relevant content to African audiences within and outside the continent’s boarders.

Created and owned by Mosunmola Abudu and available on DStv in 49 African countries, EbonyLife TV’s VOD service was first launched for Nigerian viewers in 2014 through a partnership with French mobile multimedia services firm SUMMVIEW.

The announcement of its venture outside of the West African country was made yesterday at the DISCOP Africa TV industry conference in Abidjan, Nigeria.

“We at EbonyLife TV are very excited that our teeming audiences can now catch up on EbonyLife TV on the go,” Abudu said. “With this Premium VOD platform, EbonyLife TV expands its range of services and mobile applications and provides African subscribers, as well as those outside the continent, an innovative offering of premium quality content made in Nigeria for the World.”

EbonyLife TV is available via its Android app and can also be accessed via desktop on the channel’s website.

Black-owned VOD services have been on the rise lately; in South Africa we’ve already seen two services, AzaTV and Beyond The Eyes, launched in the last few months by young entrepreneurs.

It will be interesting to see how these competitors measure up against each other among their audience, since they all host locally-produced content.
