YouTube has announced that it’s launching YouTube Gaming, a dedicated channel on “YouTube built for gamers.”

Alan Joyce, Product Manager for YouTube wrote in a blog post that the new app and website will feature everything game-worthy.

“YouTube Gaming is built to be all about your favourite games and gamers, with more videos than anywhere else. From Asteroids to Zelda, more than 25 000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that title. You’ll also find channels from a wide array of game publishers and YouTube creators.”

He explained that everything will work pretty similar to the main YouTube page, but naturally it will have a very strong gaming flavour.

“Subscribe to a channel, and you’ll get a notification as soon as they start a live stream. Uncover new favourites with recommendations based on the games and channels you love. And when you want something specific, you can search with confidence, knowing that typing “call” will show you Call of Duty and not Call Me Maybe.”

The service will be launched for the UK and US a lit bit later this year, together with an improved live experience that aims to makes it simpler to broadcast your gameplay to YouTube, as well as the ability to no longer have to schedule live feeds.

Up until now, Amazon-owned Twitch has been the go-to site for video game streaming – and there is big money involved. Twitch streams the annual Dota 2 tournament, and at the last count over a million people tuned in to watch. In mid-2013 it had an average of 43 million viewers per month, and this year that figure has jumped to over 100 million.

Amazon bought Twitch for $970 million last year, so there’s huge motivation for YouTube to create a separate gaming website, as the potential for revenue is growing by the day.
