CrecheConnect wins UCT child development hackathon

An app that lets parents rate the quality of service at their childrens’ daycare centre, has won the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Hackathon held in Cape Town last Saturday.

Over 60 participants took part in the ECD Hackathon, hosted by the University of Cape Town’s Bertha Centre and Innovation Edge, with support from the Silicon Cape, GovHack SA, and Stellenbosch University.

The aim was to come up with solutions that would address the challenges faced in early childhood development by ECD practitioners, parents and most importantly, children.

CrecheConnect, an app that’s still in concept phase, walked away with the R10 000 grand prize and the chance to apply for seed funding of up to R1 million from the Innovation Edge fund. The app is designed to help provide parents with information when deciding on the best daycare facility for their child.

The app was developed by members of the South Africa Education and Environment Project (SAEP), RegenAfrica, Western Cape ICT, NextGen Pioneers, Business Connexion, UCT ICT4Dev and CodeX, respectively.

“The combination of people, action, and ideas in a motivated environment is powerful. These collaborative learning events have the potential to produce novel approaches to addressing key challenges. More than that, they provide all of us with inspiration,” said Dr Francois Bonnici, director of The Bertha Centre.

“The success in the ECDHack day will show in the months ahead as techies and creatives take inspiration from the event to further the role technology can play in ECD and developing the minds of South Africa’s future leaders,” added Camilla Swart, co-creator of the ECD Hackathon.
