GTA-mocking parody game tops Steam’s best-seller list

Sometimes, a beautiful, earnestly-considered game with a message makes hardly anything on Steam, and at others a seemingly-daft one cobbled together with terrible hand-drawn graphics, home-made sound effects and wrapped up in a sense of humour climbs to the top of the best-seller list.

That’s exactly what happened to NotGTAV, a parody game by UK developer Not Games that sells itself more on its comparisons to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V – which it doesn’t resemble in the slightest, haha – than on any actual game-related merits.

That’s because the game itself plays pretty much exactly like that old Nokia game, Snake, and any value it brings has more to do with the game’s promotion, which is basically the devs saying “LOOK AT THIS IT’S SO BADLY MADE IT’S TOTALLY NOT GTA V HAHA (pleasedontsueus)”.

This they do in the game’s Steam Store page video and an accompanying blog post outlining its history, which they say dates back to 1870. It’s pretty funny stuff, and well worth a read through if you’re feeling blue. It’ll definitely cheer you up.

People seem inclined to give them the $0.74 they’re asking for the game (usual price $2.99) based on laughs alone, and all proceeds apparently go to charity.

Take that, better-made games.
