Your Twitter profile background image has secretly disappeared

That’s right. Log onto Twitter.com from your PC right now and you’ll see that your awesome, hand-picked background image is gone, and has been replaced by a whole lot of white nothingness – and there’s not a thing you can do about it.

Many users around the world began noticing this from as early as last night. Twitter initially did not announce it would be doing this, so many were left puzzled as to whether this was a fault or a permanent change on the social network’s part.

Going to your design settings doesn’t help either, your background will pop back up, but as soon as you log out or close the page and come back, it’s gone again.

The only (vague) explanation offered came in the form of a paragraph sent to Mashable:

“We’re removing background images from the home and notifications timelines on web for all users,” a Twitter spokesperson told Mashable Monday. “Now, background images are only available where logged-in users will see them publicly (Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages). You can find help centre content about customising your design and where it’s visible on Twitter here,” the company said.

The same goes for other people’s profiles on your timeline. The only way you can see backgrounds is if you click on a list and collection page (but how many of us actually check those out) or an individual tweet.
