Even if you’ve never heard of MakeGamesSA, you might have gathered that they raised more than R25 000 to put two underprivileged students through the Game Design courses at Wits University.
Now they’re at it again; the community of local game developers have a new altruistic call that just met it’s goal.
In a post on their site, they alerted the communities attention to a Korean student who suddenly had his funding for this semester pulled. While he does have measures in place for next year’s tuition, he desperately needs help to remain in school.
Not only did community member Nicholas Hall create the original post, but pledged R2 000 of his own money to the cause, bringing the originally needed R17 000 down to R15 000.
Following this, the goal was reached early this morning.
Well done to the local game dev community, I asked and you gave. As of 6am we've raised the funds necessary for the emergency bursary :)

All told, the drive took less than twenty hours.
South African game developers were also in the news this Sunday when venerable news show Carte Blanche showcased some of the local talent in the videogames industry.
It’s not often we get to feel that warm, patriotic feeling the Americans are always talking about. MakeGamesSA has a Steam Curator page where they highlight locally made games, we suggest you give that a view and maybe pick up a game or two.
