Apple launches the “best iPod ever”

The “best iPod ever”? Of course that’s what Apple would call the new iPod, but is it really true?

Truth is, we don’t know. What we do know is that we’ve been sent a press statement in which Apple revealed the first new iPod touch in three years, and how it’s been updated quite significantly with a bunch of Apple’s latest hardware, software and services.

The iPods nano and shuffle, on the other hand, have just been given a fresh lick of paint; nothing under the hood has changed there.

The new iPod touches use the same processor found in the iPhone 6 (Apple’s very own 64-bit A8 chip) and now come in a variety of new colours – space grey, silver, gold, pink, blue, and red.

The A8 is a really nice addition to the new iPod touch, as it’s Apple’s fastest CPU yet but uses very little power. Its efficiency will make people who hate charging their electronics every day, and its power is great news for people who like playing 3D games as well as developers who like their games to be played on as many Apple devices as possible.

There’s also a motion co-processor that the touch can use with the many fitness apps available in the App Store, and an 8MP rear-facing camera and “improved FaceTime HD camera” that should make video chats just that much smoother and clearer.

Since the iPod touch is pretty much an iPhone without the phone feature, it’ll let people access all of Apple’s new music services in addition to storing music and video files for use away from a WiFi connection. Owners get a three-month trial of Apple Music, after which they’ll be charged for the service.

The new iPod touch starts at $199 for the 16GB and ranges all the way up to $399 for the 128GB version, which is quite frankly a lot of money to pay for an Apple product that isn’t an iPhone 6.

Still, it’s nice to see Apple doing something with its iPod range for a change, but The Verge writes it’s unlikely their efforts will result in another best-seller.
