Apple to order a record number of new iPhones

Apple sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 smartphones in the first three days of its availability in September last year. Fast forward a few months, and Apple had clocked a total of 61 million iPhone 6 sales by the end of the second quarter this year.

The numbers don’t lie: Apple’s smartphones are massively popular. And that is exactly why the company has already asked suppliers to manufacture between 85 and 90 million unit of its next phones by the end of this year.

According to the Wall Street Journal, that’s over 10 million more phones than Apple ordered last year for the iPhone 6, and the order will be split between 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.

It is reasonable to assume that the new iPhone models – 6S and 6S Plus, anyone? – usually announced around August or September, will include Apple’s new Force Touch technology. Revealed during Apple’s WWDC conference earlier this year, Force Touch can differentiate between a light touch and a hard screen press, giving Apple fans new ways of interacting with their tech.

Other than that, the new phones shouldn’t be too different from last year’s models.

“The changes in the iPhone models expected to be released later this year will be less noticeable than last year’s. The phones are expected to feature Apple’s Force Touch technology that can distinguish between a light tap and deep press, allowing users to control a device differently depending on how hard they push on the screen, according to people familiar with the matter,” the WSJ wrote.
