Makers! Show your stuff off at Open Design Festival in Cape Town

Hey makers, want to showcase your wares in front of a crowd of thousands during the three week long jamboree that is The Open Design Festival in Cape Town next month? You’re in luck, because there’s two opportunities to get involved.

The festival takes place from 12th to the 23rd of August, and over the course of three weeks will feature everything from pop-up shops to seminars on architecture to toymaking. There are conference streams, expos and events far too numerous to list here.

For makers, however, two things in particular stand out.

The first is that the awesome folks at Cape Town’s Maker Station hackspace, who recently launched an effort to build a comprehensive map of maker spaces in Africa and a maker directory for finding like-minded people and artisan manufacturing services, have secured space for makers in the main expos in Watershed, City Hall, Gua S’Thebe and the Cape Town Science Centre. The idea is to get as many people involved as possible on a rota basis throughout the whole festival.

You can show off anything, from PCB building to 3D printing to drones to leatherwork, and there’s no charge for taking part in the celebration of innovation. All the organisers ask is that you fill in this form in order that they can allocate times and spaces to the appropriate groups.

And if that’s not enough, the festival will end with a three day Maker Faire Cape Town at the Lookout on the V&A Waterfront. This will take place from 21st to 23rd August and will include a separate conference strand as well as exhibition of amateur and commercial maker projects, with international speakers to be confirmed.

The Maker Faire call for makers can be found here, and if you want an idea of what to expect check out our reports from the event in Joburg last year. We’ll have more details about Maker Faire Cape Town next week.
