Five resources to help you allocate your 67 min on Mandela Day

If you’re like me and haven’t found any cause to commit a bit of your time to on Mandela Day this Saturday, we’ve found a few resources that can steer you in the right direction.

Whether you’re into getting hands dirty with some cleaning up, painting and cooking or you have a heart for our eldest and youngest citizens in South Africa, we hope you find your perfect fit and get into the spirit of things this weekend.

Better SA

Every weekend, Better SA hosts a hop-on, hop-off bus shuttling service that lets anyone sign up to spend a bit of their time volunteering at a charity organisation over weekends.

For this organisation, Mandela Day is just another day’s work for them.

All you have to do is head over to the Better SA website, look for activities being held in the area nearest to you, get yourself to the bus pick up point and Better SA will take you to the venue and bring you back to the pick up point once you’re done.

Activities include, among others, playing with and reading to kids at a children’s home and spending time with senior citizens at a home for the aged.

The official Mandela Day website is a community of do-gooders called Mandela Day Changemakers who are interested in creating positive change around them.

You can look at a list of causes around South Africa and opt to volunteer time and resources on a recurring basis or once-off.

Changemakers also upload photos of their activities and can nominate anyone they think deserves to be acknowledged as a Changemaker.

GEM Project

The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Project is a volunteer rewards program that points you in the direction of nearby charity activities happening on certain days.

Each activtiy you do earns you a certain number of GEMs which you can redeem for prepaid electricity, airtime, data or movie tickets.

The GEM Project recently teamed up with Brand South Africa to have its Mandela Day projects loaded onto the platform to have more volunteers join in.

For Good

Forgood is another great resource to find something to do not only on Mandela Day, but on any other ordinary day as well.

The site is sort of like a directory that lists causes looking for help either in the form of volunteering or monetary and material donations or any other form of help.

You’ll find background info on the organisation in need, what exactly their needs are and their location.

Alternatively, you can submit anything you have to offer on the site and it will be allocated to a relevant cause.

Black Girls Code

Black Girls Code, a US-based organisation with a local arm aimed at teaching young girls of colour how to code, will be hosting one of its regular workshops on Mandela Day.

Volunteers are needed to help out with tasks such as leading or supporting a webpage design class, mentoring a student, videotaping or photographing the event, driving new sponsorship, or helping run the games and serving food and drinks on the day.

You don’t need any experience or qualification in IT and men are more than welcome. Sign up on Meetup to be a volunteer.
