Taxi commuters in Gugulethu and Khayelitsha get free WiFi

After launching in two rural villages in the Eastern Cape, Project Isizwe is continuing its expansion beyond the borders of Gauteng with two new sites at the Gugulethu and Khayelitsha taxi ranks in Cape Town.

The free WiFi organisation made this announcement this morning, stating that it had partnered with the Open Society Foundation of South Africa on the project roll-out.

“Living without information is unthinkable and we believe that we are making a significant contribution to the people of Gugulethu and Khayelitsha by giving them access to opportunities to become employable and contribute to the economic development of the city,” said Zahir Khan, COO of Project Isizwe.

Gugulethu and Khayelitsha users also get 250MB to use per day on the network.

Yesterday, Project Isizwe released the latest stats on its user base and progress since launch, which reveal that the monthly number of users in the City of Tshwane has more than doubled since April this year and that most people are accessing the service from their mobile phones.
