Jozi youth to begin digital ambassador training at UJ

Around 3 000 young people from across the City of Joburg will start receiving training as Jozi Digital Ambassadors from the University of Johannesburg this month as part of the city’s broader WiFi distribution project.

The city’s executive mayor Parks Tau announced back in May that it had partnered with UJ to sign up youths to join the Jozi Digital Ambassadors program and deploy them across the city to promote digital literacy among residents, enabling them to make use of online tools such as websites for job-seekers, among other things.

The city announced in 2014 that it plans to have 1 000 free public WiFi hotspots operating by 2016.

Tau and UJ Vice-Chancellor Professor Ihron Rensburg will officially launch the programme at the university this Friday. The Digital Ambassadors will be trained over the next 18 months using an open source, cloud-based learner management system.

They will also receive business mentorship and guidance “…towards achieving competence in using the digital world as an enabling technology for their own innovation enterprises,” Professor Johan Meyer‚ head of the UJ School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering said in a statement.
