EFF’s Privacy Badger 1.0 will stop sites tracking you

Defenders of internet freedom at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (aka The Other EFF) have just released a very important browser extension that prevents online tracking. It also has a cute name: Privacy Badger 1.0 [Ever seen a badger fight? They aren’t cute – Ed].

The extension is able to block even the most sneaky online trackers and give users their privacy back.

Speaking about how tracking your online movements and showing you advertising based on those movements could be used maliciously, staff technologist at EFF and lead developer of Privacy Badger, Cooper Quintin, had this to say:

Those echoes from your past mean you are being tracked, and the records of your online activity are distributed to other third parties—all without your knowledge, control, or consent.

According to EFF, Privacy Badger will work in tandem with the lengthy Do Not Track (DNT) policy the organisation announced earlier in the week which allows users to opt out of being tracked online by anybody.

At present Privacy Badger is only available as a browser extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox although an FAQ on the download page suggests that it will be released for Opera, Safari and Firefox mobile in the near future. If you’re one of the five Internet Explorer veterans you’ll be sad to hear that there are no plans to release a version for your browser.

Privacy Badger is available for download at the low, low cost of free right now.
