Cortex Hub to host African women devs hackthon, R150k up for grabs

East London-based tech incubator, The Cortex Hub, has just announced it’s hosting a women’s hackathon for African female software developers this Women’s Month where participants will spend three days hacking for their shot at a R150 000 prize.

The Women Hackers Unite Hackathon is expected to attract over 100 women from across Africa who are either studying or working in software development. Participants will gather to come up with solutions to problems affecting women on our continent under the theme “Solving humanity’s problems”.

The Women Hackers Unite Hackathon takes place from 25th to 27th August. Teams of between two and five women will be formed and will spend the first 24 hours of the hackathon coming up with their solutions and start coding and polishing them off over the remaining two days.

During the event, a small conference will also be held where keynote speakers including Vodacom’s Veronica Motloutsi will address participants.

And on the last day of the hackathon, teams will submit their thesis which will be reviewed by a panel of judges including three top women software engineers from Facebook, who will vote for the best solution and award the winning team with R150 000 cash.

While there are no recent formal statistics available, it’s well known that in Africa, the number of women in ICT is significantly low. The Cortex Hub assists bright young minds to establish their own businesses in the ICT space. That was  the main driver for the hackathon. We also wanted the hackathon to coincide with Women’s Month,” said the hackathon’s organiser, Sivu Ngcaba.

The Women Hackers Unite Hackathon at The Cortex Hub offices, to be part of it, register for free on the event’s website. Registration closes on 20th August.
