Northern Cape to host its first hackathon

It seems our friends at Geekulcha have been very busy as of late: they recently held Tshwane University of Technology’s first ever hackathon, and now they’re taking the event all the way to the Northern Cape.

Called the “Northern Cape Developers Hackathon”, the event will take place on 21-22 August in Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley.

The expected categories for the event’s challenges will be: tourism, infrastructure management and monitoring, education, agriculture, crime solving and sports.

Sports will be particularly important here, as the Northern Cape will also host the World Skateboarding Championship in October.

Not just a regular hackathon, it is also done in an effort to establish an mLab in the province.

Although it is limited to 120 participants, spaces are still available. If you’d like more information or would like to take part, click here to go to the NCDev Hackathon website.

When we sat down with Jonathan Knowles (an executive at Autodesk), he was adamant that true innovation comes from unexpected places, so we’re hoping to be amazed by what this hackathon will produce.
