SA youths place among top half of countries at WorldSkills competition

Twenty one South African students who represented the country at the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition last week have placed among the top half of 59 participating countries in the contest.

Team South Africa placed 27th overall, outranking developed countries such Ireland, Portugal and the US. Micaela Newton was awarded a Medallion for Excellence in the “Restaurant Service” category.

During WorldSkills International, students participate in various challenges and tasks related to their industries and their performances are judged according to how they match international standards of quality.

The team competed in 19 skills categories including Mobile Robotics, Mechatronics, Beauty Therapy, Restaurant Services, Web Design, Dry Walling and Plastering, Automobile Repair, IT Software Solutions for Business and Cooking, among others.

“You competitors gave your best under stressful circumstances. You made us proud South Africans. All experiences are lessons learnt that influence our future. You have touched and changed the lives of many here in Brazil so when you get back home continue with the making a change in somebody’s life,” WorldSkills South Africa CEO Raymond Patel told the team.

The next WorldSkills International Competition will be held in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.
