SciBraai and Code4SA team up for DataQuest, a hackathon for science stories

Two organisations we regularly feature here on htxt.africa, SciBraai and Code4SA, have teamed up to create one up-and-coming event of truly awesome awesomeness. If you’re in Cape Town on August 22nd you can drop into Codebridge Civic Tech Lab for a day of scientific investigation of science.

Called Data Quest, it’s aimed at scientists, journalists, coders and data analysts and challenges teams of up to three to create stories out of science data sets. If ever you’ve cringed at a tabloid headline that somewhat oversimplifies years of painstaking research and primary data gathering, this is your chance to prove that it’s possible to build engaging yet honest stories out of academic research.

Data sets for the project must be from one of three categories: health, environment or general research, and must be  turned into a multimedia article over the course of the hackathon. This will then be judged, and the winners will go on to have theirs professionally edited and proofed before being published on SciBraai and Code4SA. (We’ll probably ask if we can republish here too.)

Data Quest is set to take place on August 22nd, from nine in the morning at Codebridge Civic Tech Lab in Cape Town.

If you’d like to participate, it is free to enter but spaces are limited. You can sign up here.

Oh, and there’s going to be an actual braai too.
