Frustrated Standard Bank customers woke up on Monday morning to find that the bank’s website and app services are down and have taken to Twitter to flag the issue.

Indications that the website was not working were first picked up when a customer tweeted on Sunday afternoon that they couldn’t access it.

This 503 error message pops up on the website’s home page when trying to get in.

More complaints started pouring in by Monday morning, and according to the bank the outages were caused by “technical issues”, but didn’t describe what kind of issues these are.

Standard Bank’s CEO of personal and business banking, Funeka Montjane in an interview with Talk Radio 702 said the company discovered hardware issues at around 8:15am in one of their data servers.

The bank tweeted that their technicians are working to have the services back up and running but the bank said it couldn’t give an estimated time frame of when it would be sorted out.

Standard Bank said it will keep customers updated via its Twitter and Facebook accounts.

[UPDATE: A message posted at 14:50 on the Standard Bank blog said all affected services are back up and to make up for it, the bank has extended banking hours to 5pm for the next few days at all its branches. We tried getting back on the website but still got a 503 error message however, so it may take a bit of time for everything to be back up for all customers.]
