Wind farm that could power 200k households to be built in the Western Cape

To help combat Eskom’s fossil-fuelled struggle to keep South Africa’s lights on, a group of companies lead by Acciona Energia has commissioned the construction of a 138MW wind farm in Gouda in the Western Cape, according to Clean Technology Business Review.

That 138MW will be generated by 46 separate, 3MW wind turbines mounted on 100m tall concrete towers. This will – theoretically, at least – generate about 423GWh of electricity annually, which CTBR says is enough to power “close to 200 000 South African households”. It is also said to eliminate 406 million tons of CO2 emissions.

The wind farm will be located in the municipality of Drakenstein, which is around 100 kilometres from Cape Town. At the time of writing, no anticipated completion date had been given.

As for the bureaucratic side of the project, it was approved by the Department of Energy in the second round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) – a programme intended to increase the amount of renewable energy used to power the country.

Acciona Energia has also announced plans to bid in future rounds of REIPPPP, which is good news as the company also controls a 94.3MWp Sishen photovoltaic plant in the country as well as owning and operating plants with a total installed capacity of around 8 600MW in 15 different countries, so clearly they know a thing or two about solar.
