Geekulcha’s school holiday ICT program kicks off around SA next week

As public schools around South Africa round up their third term this Friday, Geekulcha is set to start the October edition of its Vacation Work (VacWork) Program.

VacWork will take place in three provinces next week and is aimed at equipping learners with ICT skills they can use at school and beyond.

The Geeklucha VacWork Program gives high school learners the chance to learn about ICT, the different careers in the industry and how they can pursue them.

This term’s program will be run in collaboration with The Innovation Hub, CoT, mLab SA, MEMT Group (Creative Youth Lab) and the Northern Cape Provincial Government from the 5th to the 9th October. It will host 80 learners in Gauteng, 21 in Mpumalanga and over 400 in the Northern Cape.

Candidates were chosen based on community enhancing ideas they submitted.

“The VacWork October edition of the programme focuses on Flora Apps to get youngsters involved in and to appreciate the conservation of plant life,”Geekulchas’s Tiyani Nghonyama said in a statement.

“In this growing world, ICT is seen as an enabler in many aspects of our everyday life and applications are endless. Geekulcha believes that in order to prepare a better and greener future, we need to equip our future leaders with the right skills that will help them drive the socio-economic and human life development and sustainability.”

Workshops will be hosted by different mentors in the following categories:

Web applications
Electronics
Graphic design
Business/Entrepreneurship

Attendees will build Flora Apps to address issues such as plant knowledge, deforestation, flora care, smart plants IoT systems, plantation conditions diagnosis, among others.
