BlackBerry CEO blows worldwide exclusive hands-on with the new Priv smartphone

Oh, BlackBerry – will the world ever take you seriously again?

I’m not sure it will, given the spectacularly cringe-worthy first-look CEO John Chen gave to Canada’s Business News Network (BNN) of the company’s latest smartphone, the Priv, over the weekend.

Now the Priv is an exciting concept all on its own, because it’s a BlackBerry slider phone that runs a non-BB operating system, building on BlackBerry’s excellent body design with a physical keyboard but replacing BB10 with the latest version of Android.

So you’d think the CEO of the company would be familiar with it before shooting started, given the interest such an awesome-sounding phone would generate.

But poor John Chen battled to get to grips with the phone during a video interview with BNN, stumbling over the interface, saying that the phone “runs Google” and then battling to launch Chrome, only getting it to launch after several stabs with his finger.

He also didn’t seem sure what “Priv” stood for, saying yes when asked whether it meant “privilege”, but then vacillating between that and what everyone else is saying about it, that it actually means “privacy”.

And if you think that’s bad, later on he says – with a straight face – that everyone loves BB10, but that it just “doesn’t have enough apps”. I think we all know that’s not entirely true, since you’ve been able to side-load Android apps on BB10 phones for over a year now, giving phones access to the vast majority of Google’s Play Store apps.

Just watch the video and see for yourself.

Shame, John. Perhaps prepare a little better next time?
