Everything you need to know about the Tesla Model X SUV

Elon Musk has revealed the latest addition to the Tesla family of electric powered vehicles, the all-wheel drive Tesla Model X SUV.

The Model X will be available in two iterations; the P90D geared for performance and the 90D which is primarily focused on travel range. The P90D is able reach a range of 250 miles (402km) on a single charge while the 90D can travel an additional seven miles (11km) on the same charge.

Both vehicles boast a 155mph (249kmph) top speed and have a 259 horsepower front motor. The 90D will have the same motor at the rear with the same power while the P90D will have a 503hp motor at the rear.

The biggest difference between these two models is the 0-60mph times. The P90D is able to clock in at 3.8 seconds but with the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade this drops to 3.2 seconds. The 90D has an admirable 0-60mph time of 4.8 seconds.

Tesla also revealed that all Model X vehicles will be fitted with Falcon Wing doors which open in a similar fashion to the Mercedes Benz gull-wing doors. The doors are fitted with sensors that will prevent the doors from hitting your garage roof, no matter the height.

Both of the new vehicles have a specific focus on safety with continuous scans of the road taking place via camera, radar and sonar. This continuous monitoring comes into effect when the Model X detects an emergency and automatically applies brakes, even when traveling at high speeds.

Safety features stretch into common impact zones such as the front of the vehicle and the sides, which are designed to absorb impact as efficiently as possible. The Model X range is also fitted with medical grade high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters.

The new Model X vehicles will be available in the US in late 2016.
