Facebook is finally getting a ‘dislike’ button

Mark Zuckerberg announced that a ‘dislike button’ will be added to Facebook.

Addressing a Q&A session at Facebook’s headquarters in  California said that the new feature on the social network is “very close” to being ready for user testing. This marks a bit of a turnaround for Zuckerberg and Facebook, who in the past, said that they were never planning to build this feature, in spite of the fact that tons of users had been asking for it for ages.

“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years,” Zuckerberg said.”Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it.”

Right now, it’s hard to know how the dislike button will work. There’s been quite  a bit of speculation that it could work in the same way as Reddit’s upvote/downvote function, with which users can push content they like to make it more popular. It could also, sadly, be a gift to anyone who wants to start trolling people on Facebook, a fact that would be hardly lost on Zuckerberg.

“What [Facebook users] really want is the ability to express empathy,” said Zuckerberg. “Not every moment is a good moment.”

Zuckerberg gave no indication of when the dislike button would be added to Facebook but at least we know it’s now in the pipeline.
