LED dress made by young girls to hit New York Fashion Week

A group of teenage girl coders will make their unofficial debut at New York Fashion Week when a dress they helped code-design hits the catwalk during world-famous designer, Zac Posen’s show.

Posen teamed up with young girls from Black Girls Code, Flatiron School, Girls Who Code and Lower East Side Girls Club through Google’s Made with Code program to create an LED light dress.

The girls worked together to code different LED patterns for the dress online, while Posen took charge of the dress’ overall design. The dress’ LED technology was fabricated by fashion engineer and Made with Code mentor, Maddy Maxey.

“When the dress goes down the runway, it will displays girls’ patterns in 500 LED lights, using a micro controller specially tuned to match Zac’s Spring Summer 2016 runway collection—from Catalina Blue to Acid Yellow,” Google said in a blog post.

Google said the aim of the project is to inspire girls to try coding and to see it as a means to pursue their dream careers and to show how computer science can push the boundaries of what’s possible – even in the world of fashion.

“In the past year, we’ve seen many encouraging signs that more girls are exploring computer science. More than five million coding projects have been tried since Made with Code began a year ago. And Googlers, teen girls and partners like Girls Inc, Technovation and Girl Scouts have thrown over 300 Made with Code parties across the US, reaching tens of thousands teen girls in person,” Google said.

New York Fashion Week runs from the 10th to 17th September.
