Sony just launched the world’s first 4K smartphone

Think your shiny new smartphone’s display resolution is pretty good? Well, think again: Sony has just unleashed the world’s first 4K smartphone at this year’s IFA in Berlin.

Officially announced yesterday, the Xperia Z5 Premium is a 5.5-inch smartphone that has a screen resolution four times that of full HD, which once you see it, will totally leave you in awe.

“Xperia Z5 Premium takes a giant leap in display technology, adding more pixels to reach an ultra-sharp 806 PPI. That’s around 10x the pixels of a Full HD TV, and more than double for most smartphones,” says the official Sony Mobile site.

And don’t worry if you don’t have any 4K content readily available on your phone, as the Xperia Z5 Premium will upscale anything to 4K for you – including photos.

It should go without saying, but just in case you were wondering, the phone has a 4K camera as well so you will be able to take better-looking photos and video. In fact, it has a 23MP rear camera with an Exmor RS for mobile sensor.

“This means that your videos have four times the detail of Full HD. Add to that a host of Sony handy-cam technologies, including Steadyshot for stable videos, and you can count on flawless footage,” Sony explained.

Another impressive aspect of the 4K camera is that you will be able to capture 8MP still images from any video footage you capture.

On the inside, the Z5 Premium has a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, 64-bit Octa Core processor and runs Google’s Android 5.1 operating system.

In terms of size, it measures 154.4 x 76.0 x 7.8 mm and weighs 188g. For audio lovers, it can play all your favourite songs in High-Resolution Audio.

And for those fond of biometric unlocking mechanisms, it also features a new, integrated fingerprint sensor.

“Smartphones are part of people’s lives. Since users already create, share and enjoy most of their content on the go, we’ve set out to bring Sony’s latest innovations in camera, design and display to ensure the Xperia Z5 series is the best possible lifestyle and entertainment platform,” said Hiroki Totoki, president and CEO at Sony Mobile Communications.
