Telkom’s “Unlimited Summer” promo offers data and calls for cheap

Telkom has a bunch of new data and call offerings that launched today, aimed at making yours an “Unlimited Summer”.

The promo has several offers aimed at offering people a whole lot of connectivity options, for what seems like fairly reasonable money.

For instance, the lead offer is what Telkom calls “Mix Unlimited”, a 24-month contract that provides unlimited data, unlimited phone calls to mobile and Telkom landline numbers, unlimited texts and a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge 32GB or an iPhone 6 16GB and a landline for a buck shy of R2 000 a month. You will need to provide the landline handset, though, as one is not included.

Sadly, a “Fair Usage” policy – which basically means if you download too much Telkom will either cut you off entirely or throttle your download speeds – applies to Mix Unlimited’s data portion, which would technically make it a limited unlimited offer (if you wanted to split hairs).

And then there’s the SmartInternet Unlimited package that provides unlimited countrywide mobile data and a Huawei router for R899pm, bound to a 24-month contract. There is no specific mention of a Fair Usage Policy on that one, but it’s probably covered in the “Ts & Cs apply” that’s in small print below the offer.

There are several others on Telkom’s official “Unlimited Summer” page, including one for unlimited data only (you provide the device) and one for an eight-inch Huawei tablet and 1GB of data month for R89, which qualifies for the “unlimited” description as it also gives you free nationwide WiFi via Telkom’s 6 000+ hotspots.

To be fair the offers are actually quite good, and Telkom should be commended for trying, but the fact that there are limitations on any of these offers seems to say that South African companies don’t truly know what the word “unlimited” actually means to people.

Still, these should prove enticing to anyone tired of watching their minutes and megabyte usage.
