VOD service Vidi is giving away a Ferrari 458 Spider – but be careful how you enter the competition

Times Media Group (TMG) just upped the ante in the battle for online viewers of video-on-demand services in South Africa. You might be able to watch Game of Thrones on ShowMax, but sign up for TMG’s Vidi and you can win a Ferarri.

Apparently, the promotion is to celebrate the service’s first birthday and will see one viewer drive away in a 2015 Ferrari 458 Spider.

The VIDI Ferrari 458 Spider competition runs from September 10, 2015, to January 17, 2016. To enter, you have to dial *120*360# and follow the instructions. Each entry costs R1.50 and participants can enter as many times as they wish.

Be careful, though. If you visit www.vidi.co.za you’ll see a banner that looks like this.

If you click to register you’ll be taken to a signup page for Vidi’s free seven day trial. Complete the form there and you’ll get your streaming TV trial, but you won’t be entered into the competition. The wording in the banner is very carefully chosen, because the competition rules say:

4. How to enter
4.1 Purchase a copy of a participating Times Media newspaper publication or visit www.vidi.co.za and enter the USSD number shown.
4.2 You will receive a reply confirming your entry into the competition and be given the option to enter again.

The only mechanism for entry is the USSD code on your phone. To be fair to Vidi, the sign-up page also has a banner add saying that you can enter with the USSD code, but the presumption in our minds was that registering would mean entry into the competition. We’ve flagged the issue up with TMG, but not had a response as yet.

The competition runs for 133 days, and a finalist will be drawn from each day. Once all 133 finalists have been chosen, the grand prize winner be selected from the 133 people at the end of the campaign.
