Vodacom’s Smart Speed is an R1 299 LTE smartphone

Following a top 10 listing on the 2015 Sunday Times Top Brands awards Vodacom has announced three new smartphones and a tablet are to be released under its in-house brand. The announcement was made at Vodacom head office in Midrand this morning.

With 1.6 million South Africans still using a feature phone to access the internet, these low cost smartphone solutions may be the entry point many South Africans need to connect to the internet.

Motsa said in a statement, “Historically, we sold more non-smartphones; now Smart devices have surpassed non-smartphones as best sellers. We have approximately 12 million active smartphones on our network up from nine million a year ago.”

Among the smartphones which were launched is an entry level LTE smartphone.

The Vodacom Smart Speed is a 4.5-inch smartphone with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels running Android 5.1 Lollipop that features 5MP camera at the rear. The retail price of this smartphone equipped with LTE is a mere R1 299 or R99 per month on the uChoose Flexi 55 contract package.

For those looking for something a bit cheaper the Vodacom Smart Grand is a 5-inch, entry level smartphone running Android Lollipop that will retail for R1 099 or R89 per month of the uChoose Flexi 55 contract package.

The Vodacom Power Tab is a 10.1-inch tablet that, like the rest of the updated Smart series, runs Android 5.1. The tablet also features 10 point multi-touch and will retail for R1 799 or R99 per month on the 250MB Data Price contract plan.

Finally, the smartphone vying for the mid range market, the Vodacom Smart Ultra 6, features a 5.5-inch HD display with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing camera. The Ultra 6 is expected to retail for R3 199 or R199 per month on the uChoose Flexi 110 contract package.

Vodacom’s Managing executive for terminals, Davide Tacchino spoke about the new smartphones and tablets and said, “Since August 2014, we sold over 2.1 million Vodacom branded handsets and tablets. It’s no secret South Africans are data hungry and there is an increasing need for smart devices. I’m confident that our own branded smart range partnered with our propositions and world-class network is well positioned to provide the best mobile experience to customers.”
