WeChat and other apps infected in Apple App Store’s first major breach

Apple says its working to remove malware-infected apps from its App Store after it suffered its first major attack.

The malware, which the BBC is reporting is a program called XcodeGhost, apparently infected a number of apps on iPhones and iPads in China. Apple says XcodeGhost made its way into apps, after hackers used social engineering to convince customers to download counterfeit versions of Apple’s software.

“We’ve removed the apps from the App Store that we know have been created with this counterfeit software,” Apple spokeswoman Christine Monaghan told Reuters.”We are working with the developers to make sure they’re using the proper version of Xcode to rebuild their apps.”

Monaghan says that the infected apps have now been removed but didn’t go into any detail about the steps iPhone and iPad users could take to find out whether or not any apps on their devices are affected.

Among the apps infected by XcodeGhost were the hugely popular instant messenger service WeChat, the Chinese competitor to Uber, Didi Chuxing and CamCard, a popular card-scanning app. WeChat will be of particular concerns to Apple device users as it boasts over 600 million active users – many of which are based right here in South Africa.

We at htxt have reached out to Apple’s local distributors for comment and to see if any local devices could have been infected my the XcodeGhost malware. We’ll update this story as and when we hear from them. Watch this space…
