SA’s best and worst cities for safe driver behaviour are…

Windy Port Elizabeth might not be the best place to unfold an umbrella on the street, but it is apparently the safest place to drive your car. That’s according to insurance house Discover, which has datamined the behaviour of 30 000 South African drivers for its second annual Insure Driving Challenge.

The information was collected through the Discovery Insure App, which was able to track parameters such as phone motion while driving, speed and cornering. Through the app, the firm was able to tell if people were using their phone for different tasks while driving too.

Port Elizabeth came out tops in the survey, thanks to its motorists driving at lower speeds than elsewhere in the country and revealing fewer instances of being distracted. Cape Town and Bloemfontein took second and third place respectively.

Pretoria and Johannesburg were found to have the most distracted drivers. The Mpumalanga capital of Nelspruit was found to have the most speedsters while Johannesburg didn’t even crack the top five, presumably due to the constant state of traffic in the city.

Discovery did say that overall driving standards had risen compared to last year. Most impressive was a 22% drop in cellphone use while at the wheel. The firm has compiled an infographic detailing some of the more interesting findings, such as whether women or men are better drivers, which you can view below.

What’s important to note is that the data doesn’t include traditional metrics like accidents or deaths per capita on the roads in different regions. Comparing those two data sets would clearly be very interesting indeed…
