Drugstore’s R35k contest to merge tech startups’ solutions with local restauarants

An international incubation program that helps tech startups develop innovative solutions for local restaurants will be launching  South Africa soon.

Oh there’s R35 000 up for grabs for the winning concept.

Originally founded by international creative agency, Publicis Worldwide and hosted in South Africa by the agency’s local arm, Publicis Machine, Drugstore is a week-long technology incubation and acceleration competition that aims to change the face of local restaurants.

Entries are open for tech startups to submit their ideas that can be used in the industry, be it an app, website, payment system and so on.

“You can be beacon junkies, Arduino fiends or even general internet of things tinkerers – we don’t even care if your core focus is something entirely unrelated to the restaurant industry, we’re keen to hear why you believe you’re the right partner for Publicis Machine at our innaugural Drugstore,” the agency said in a statement.

Three startups will be chosen to take part in Drugstore where they’ll work side by side with the Publicis Machine strategy team to build their solution for an as-yet-unnamed popular South African restaurant brand.

The finalists will also be taken through a series of  brand inductions, multiple trade visits and critical working and idea-generation sessions. A pitch showcase will be held towards the end of the program where one startup will receive a R35 000 cash prize and a potential contract to partner with Publicis Machine and the restaurant to implement their solution around the country.

A R10 000 prize will be awarded to the first runner up and the second runner up will get R5 000.

To enter Drugstore, send your company bio, any other supporting material such as videos and photos and a ‘one page’ motivational letter to drugstore@publicismachine.com  before 16th October. Finalists will be announced on the 19th October.

“We don’t want to give too much of the exact client brief away just yet, but if you believe you can deliver innovation in the world of technology and believe that what you bring to the table can innovate in the restaurant space, you’re welcome to apply,” said Andy Gilder, head of digital at Publicis Machine.

Drugstore takes place from th 2nd to 6th of November in Johannesburg.
