HTC’s One A9 looks great, but no news on SA launch date yet

Every smartphone manufacturer and its holding company is claiming to have created an “iPhone killer” and while we wouldn’t necessarily agree with them, HTC has announced its One A9 that packs a punch, even if you aren’t Apple crazy.

Like most things in life, its what’s inside that counts. HTC has fitted the One A9 with a 64bit Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor, with four big cores running at 1.5GHz and the other four small ones at 1.2GHz.

Still inside we find 3GB of memory, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and expansion for an MicroSD card up to 2TB in capacity.

All this capacity will come in handy when you start taking photos. The One A9 will boast a 13MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an F2.0 aperture.

The new Pro mode in the camera settings bring professional-style photography to your smartphone just like the LG G4 did earlier this year. Tools like Hyperlapse promise to make editing video on your phone an almost professional experience with you being able to speed up or slow down video footage. HTC Zoe can be used to easily combine video and still photos to make great compilations to share with your family.

Viewing your photos should be great on the edge-to-edge 5inch AMOLED display. The display will be full high definition at 1080p and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The One A9 will be available in four colours, Carbon Gray, Opal Silver, Topaz Gold and Deep Garnet.

Other features crammed into the HTC One A9 include Fast Charge 2.0 and an interesting new feature called Doze which HTC says close power hungry apps and conserve the 2150mAh battery.

The One A9 is the first non-Nexus phone to launch running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and cost will be determined once HTC and South African network operators reach an agreement regarding availability in the country. Internationally, it’s being sold as a mid-range phone at around R4 500. Fingers crossed that when it gets here it’ll cost the same.
