Huge overhaul mod brings the original Deus Ex into the 21st century

A group of very passionate modders have breathed new life into the original Deus Ex with their “Revision” mod.

Revision brings overhauled lighting, textures, interface elements and environments to the 2000 AD game to make it look more like something released in the last few years, offering blessed relief for gamers who loved the original and its sequels, but who cringed when re-playing the classic game on modern gaming rigs.

Lookin’ good there, Deus Ex.

The developers even remastered the original soundtrack, so it no longer sounds like it’s being played through a cheap synthesiser, and models no longer look like they were created with the goal of minimising polygons to run on graphics hardware from 15 years ago.

To get the mod, you need to own the “Game of the Year” edition of Deus Ex on Steam, and then download the Revision pack which then does all the heavy lifting, replacing many of the game’s files with its own. Having done exactly that myself yesterday, I noted that the core game is 680-odd MB, and the Revision mod clocks in at just over 5GB, making the mod almost five times bigger than the game it’s modifying.

To celebrate the release of the Revision mod, and possibly to call attention to the upcoming Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (which is out next year February), publisher Square Enix has granted Deus Ex: GOTY Edition a crazy 80% discount on Steam as part of Steam’s huge “Stealth Sale”. But you’ll have to grab it quickly, the deal ends at 7pm tonight; you’ll find it here.

If you haven’t yet experienced the original Deus Ex, a game that forever changed what a roleplaying first person shooter could be and blew gamers’ minds with a really good conspiracy-theory story, now’s the time. It’ll cost you less than a cup of coffee, and it’s well worth a playthrough while you wait for Mankind Divided.
