UK students’ solar lamp wins Enactus social entrepreneur contest in Joburg

A team of students from the University of Southampton in the UK were crowned the world’s top university social entrepreneurs at the Enactus World Cup 2015 held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday.

Enactus World Cup is an annual global competition hosted by the Enactus non-profit organisation for student social entrepreneurs with community-based solutions.

Through its programs, Enactus helps students strike up relationships with corporate organisations to secure funding and scale their solutions.

Four thousand students from thirty three teams, including South African students from the University of Zululand who made it to the semi-finals, took part in the competition. Awards were presented by African Union Chairwoman, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Enactus President Alvin Rohrs.

Team Southampton won for their Right Light solar lamp project in Kenya, Uganda and Madagascar. The team designed 10 solar lamps to be rented out in rural communities in the three countries.

Each cost-saving lamp is 66% less expensive than kerosene or paraffin and is safer to use than the flammable traditional lighting resources.

Second place went to the Bringham Young University team from the US, which launched a Cacao farming project in the Ivory Coast, while the Mohammedia School of Engineering from Morocco‘s sustainable energy sources project, allowed the team to take third place.

“We would like to thank the Rainbow Nation for being such great hosts. Enactus is beautiful because of our diversity … you are all winners. Keep working hard and reach for the sky,” said Enactus chairman Kees Kruythoff.

Next year’s Enactus World Cup will be hosted in September, in Toronto, Canada.
