Help SA startups squash programming bugs – app.clinic() calls for mentors

Devs and UX experts: want to help mentor a young app company?

South African developers have made many world class apps; recent successes of note that come to mind are VCPay, 22Seven, WumDrop and SnapScan.

We know there’s a wealth of local talent that could be producing many more international success stories, but just can’t quite get the magic formula right.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with our friends at JoziHub to put together a monthly session aimed at young  developers and businesses with great ideas that need a little bit of help to iron out the kinks.

Whether it’s refining the UI or understanding how to build technology that will scale to millions of users, we think the goodwill of the SA tech community can be focussed on making things better and creating more opportunities for all.

The sessions are called app.clinic(), and the aim is to pair developers with a seasoned professional who can listen to their most pressing problems and offer advice to either fix them, or at least point teams in the right direction. All of this takes place in the space of an hour and a half.

So far, the app.clinic() sessions have been very successful. They’re invaluable for the young developers involved, and highly rewarding for the old hands who volunteer to help us.

This is why we want to invite more of the latter to take part.

We want to build a list of experts who would be willing to give up a couple of hours every once in a while to take part in the app.clinic() events. Our aim is to be able to match the nascent apps with the right people ahead of each event, so that more time can be spent on the important stuff once its underway.

To achieve this, we want to build a mailing list of people who have skills in just about everything who we can contact a couple of weeks ahead of an app.clinic() as and when the need arises.

If you’re interested in taking part, just fill in the Google form over here and one of our colleagues from JoziHub will be in touch.
