A full size, 3D printed Master Chief suit of armour from Halo

One of the biggest events this year for Xbox One owners and fans of the Halo series is the release of Halo 5: Guardians. The newest outing of Master Chief, Cortana and miscellaneous future soldiers are back to stir up the fanfare and get everyone amped for the Halo universe once again.

Not content with simply controlling a Spartan warrior by way of a controller, Reddit user profezzorn has gone and made his very own Master Chief suit of armour with the help of a 3D printer.

Posted on parts of Reddit dedicated to 3D printing, gaming, and Halo itself, profezzorn submitted a short build log for the project.

Using a model of the mute Master Chief as a reference, the various parts of the armour were modelled and then printed. The pieces were sanded down and then painted.

But no good warrior goes to battle without a weapon; a battle rifle was also created to accompany the armour.

The armour pieces were printed at millimetres height, and the rifle at 0.2 millimetres on a Velleman k8200 printer. Some parts – such as the helmet – were taken off of Thingiverse and then modified. The visor used here is actually from a motorcycle helmet that was bought off of eBay.

The project – which was started around March – is very conservatively said to have costed $600 (R8 250). The plastics alone weigh around 15 kilograms and took 500 hours or so to print (not including upwards of 100 hours of failed prints).

In the discussions, profezzorn confirmed that the armour is based on the “MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor” which is well-known as Master Chief’s preferred suit.

The keen-eyed among you may see something from a different series of games peeking through the armour plate. To save time and fill in some of the gaps between the main pieces, a spandex costume of a Nanosuit from Crysis is worn.

Our editor Nick is in the midst of playing through Halo 5: Guardians; expect a review very soon.
