Almost every single tax return was done electronically this season

Almost every South African citizen and/or organisation skipped queues by opting to do their tax returns online this year, according to South African Revenue Service (SARS).

SARS acting commissioner Jonas Makwakwa revealed this today after the tax return season drew to a close this past Friday.

Of the 5.94 million submissions received (11.52% higher than in 2014), 99.96% of returns were filed either via eFiling (51.8%) or electronically-assisted filing at a SARS branch or mobile tax unit. Manual submissions represented less than 2000 returns (0.04% of total submissions).

“We are proud of the high level of fiscal citizenship demonstrated by taxpayers. Thank you South Africa, this tax season belongs to the millions of taxpayers that submitted their tax returns on time,”Makwakwa  said.

SARS encouraged those who are yet to submit their taxes via efiling to do so urgently.
