AMD Crimson slows down GPU fans, hotfix expected today

Those using the latest AMD Crimson drivers have reported a number of bugs in the driver suite that lock fan speeds down to 20% regardless of thermal temperature.

According to a report on WCCFTech GPU’s that have been affected go as far back as the HD 7000 series and could encompass cards up to, and including, the latest R9 3xx series.

AMD has sent out a tweet which states that it intends on releasing a hotfix for the problem later today. While waiting for this patch AMD users have been advised not to run any benchmarks intended to stress the GPU.

Most modern graphics cards are designed to throttle performance at high temperatures and limit performance as a result. When the card reaches a critical temperature it will switch off to protect itself but components near the GPU may be affected by prolonged heat exposure.

For those that can’t wait for the hotfix you are able to switch the fans to a higher speed manually by following the instructions below.

  • Open AMD Crimson Drivers
  • Select and open Global Settings
  • Select and open Global Overdrive Settings
  • Scroll down to the Fan Speed option which should be set at 20% and be marked as On
  • To switch the fans to automatically spin faster at higher temperatures you’ll need to switch the Fan Speed to Off.
  • Alternatively you can increase the fan speed from 20% to a higher percentage though this will result in your fans spinning at that speed constantly.

Hopefully AMD is able to release this patch as fast as possible before any major damage is done and it has to compensate users for burnt out graphics cards.
