Apple Music for Android, should you download it?

Apple Music has been in South Africa since June and while iPhone users have been able to enjoy the service, those that can’t afford or don’t want an iPhone were left waiting for the Android release.

Today the Apple Music app arrives for the Android operating system.

For those that may not be aware, Apple Music is a music streaming service that gives you access to millions of artists and songs across all your smart technology from R59.99 per month.

After you’ve downloaded the app you are prompted to sign in with an Apple ID or sign up. Signing up will grant you a free three month trial though you will need to provide credit card details for billing once that expires.

Logging into the app is a familiar experience if you’ve used Apple Music before and simple even if you haven’t. You are met with the “For You” tab that suggests music to you based on your preferences. New music will suggest the latest releases no matter your tastes and Radio, well that’s where you’ll find the Radio stations.

For You, New and your personal iTunes library are all easily accessible from the Android app.

We were worried that the app would be poorly optimised on the mid-range HTC we’re testing the app on but aside from a bit of delay while streaming our personal library, the app works quite well.

Apple has included options to switch off the use of cellular data so that you don’t spend thousands streaming your daily soundtrack. For the audiophiles Apple Music has an option that when selected will stream music at the highest quality on your cellular connection.

Make sure you switch the settings to your preferred data consumption settings. Download over Wifi is switched off by default.

If you’re already an Apple Music member using an Android smartphone or tablet we would suggest downloading the app and using it, it works well and while your data usage will go up that is an unfortunate result of streaming music.

For those that aren’t subscribed to the service and aren’t invested in the Apple ecosystem at all, you could give this a pass without missing anything important.
