League of Legends team sold for around R14 million

Team Diginitas – a British company that owns and manages many esports teams – has sold one of its League of Legends teams for about $1 million due to rules in the professional circuits the team was competing in.

The company previously had two LoL teams – one North American and the other European. Unfortunately, due to a rule which prevents a single company from managing more than a single team, the decision was made to sell the European team.

The team was bought by Follow Esports which, like Team Diginitas, also manages multiple teams across several games.

LoL is one of the most popular esports in the world alongside the “other” big-name game, Valve’s DOTA2. LoL’s biggest tournament was the “LoL 2014 World Championship” which had a prize pool of more than $2 million (R30 million). While not quite at the level of DOTA2’s “The International 2015” at $18 million (R250 million), it’s still a substantial payday.

To compare those numbers to “traditional” professional sports, recently, the manager of Chelsea Football Club was rumoured to be fired soon. If let go, a clause in his contract would force the club to pay him around £9.5 million (R202 million), which is estimated to be his yearly income.
