SABC CEO suspended just four months into the job

The SABC has announced that its CEO, Frans Matlala, has been suspended just four months after being appointed.

The national broadcaster’s board in a statement said Matlala has been “suspended with immediate effect pending an investigation”, but did not mention what the investigation was about.

The UCT and Duke University-educated Matlala previously worked as a project management and strategic advisory services consultant at the SABC.

In the meantime, SABC group executive of news and current affairs, Jimi Matthews, will be acting group CEO, moving from his position as acting COO that was he was appointed to after a disciplinary inquiry into controversial COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

The SABC has already gone through nine CEO’s since 2009, most having left before their terms were up.
