Snapdragon 820 shows off its 4K capabilities and 600mbps download speeds

The world was given a sneak peak at the latest Snapdragon 820 mobile platform earlier this year, but last night Qualcomm unveiled every detail about it in all its glory.

The processor is based on Qualcomm’s latest 14nm Kyro quad-core CPU which the company claims is twice as fast as the older Snapdragon 810 processor. This will be paired with the new Hexagon 680 DSP chip that will reportedly increase battery life significantly.

The brand new Spectra Camera Image Signal Processor (ISP) will be able to snap images at up to 28MP and shoot 4K videos. Support for 4K streaming at 60 frames per second over HDMI 2.0 and Miracast 2.0 has also been added.

Onward to our favourite part of this processor: its connectivity options. The usual suspects are all here, so HDSPA, GSM and Edge are supported but Qualcomm has integrated its X12 LTE technology that it reports is able to reach download speeds of 600Mbps and upload speeds of 150Mbps. That’s a lot of bandwidth.

Ready for the future

The chipset will also support LTE in the unlicensed spectrum; making it well-prepared for a time when we’ve finally completed our digital migration and new spectrum opens up for use.

Future-proofing doesn’t end there; the new Adreno 530 GPU will support OpenGL ES 3.1+ and Vulcan once these technologies are made public.

You will also be able to enjoy Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics which allow you to unlock your phone and make payments with a fingerprint read through ultrasonic sensors, or you could scan your iris to unlock your phone. The technology is explained in the rather comical, but still informative, video below.

From the specifications we can see, this Snapdragon processor looks like it could be the perfect processor for Microsoft’s Continuum which is currently running on the Snapdragon 810 in the Lumia 950XL.

Unfortunately Qualcomm hasn’t released the heat output of this processor, something the older Snapdragon 810 became infamous for. High heat outputs rendered phones like the HTC One M9 almost unusable at full tilt, and we really hope that this problem has been resolved.

Expect to see phones powered by these processors in the first quarter of 2016.
