This awesome 3D printed armour took 500 hours to make

BlizzCon 2015 is now behind us, and in among all the amazing cosplays on show, we have to draw some attention to this 3D printed costume courtesy of Natasha Spokish. A prop and costume maker by trade, Spokish took on recreating the character Nova Terra (or simply Nova) from Blizzard’s StarCraft series.

The journey started with game assets from Heroes of the Storm, in which Nova is a character. Unfortunately, while the models taken from the game were accurate, they were also lacking in detail. Spokish then added in the missing details using Blender; a process that took weeks to accomplish.

The armour pieces, after their detail was added, were test fitted virtually. Spokish happened to have a full 3D print of herself from New York Comic Con which she used to scale her pieces before going to print.

With everything squared away, the parts were printed on a LulzBot TAZ 3D printer in PLA. The prints were smoothed down using XTC-3D epoxy, sanded, primed and then given a base coat. The final layer of detail was added via hydro dipping – a method of printing on 3D objects by using water to transfer a print. Check out this video to see it in action, it’s a little bit of modern-day magic.

According to answers Spockish gave to commenters, the full project took around 500 hours of print time with countless more poured into the modelling process. It also cost about $400-$500 (R5 700-R7 130) to make, excluding the cost of the 3D printer.
